GMP Sulawesi Emergency Appeal

GMP have launched an appeal for the disasters that have befallen the people of Sulawesi. The death toll has risen to 2,010 people and with the Indonesian government moving into ‘recovery’ mode on Thursday, then the suspected 4-5,000 people listed as missing will no doubt be added to the death toll. Although the initial disasters occurred on Sept 28, this is an ongoing disaster as rescuers move into more remote areas.

You can find the appeal at, All giving above $2 is tax deductible.

The devastating earthquake and tsunami that occurred in Sulawesi on September 28 has deeply impacted people. In response, GMP has launched a Churches of Christ Overseas Aid (COCOA) emergency appeal – in partnership with Act Alliance – to raise critical support for the 70,000 displaced people. Your support is needed to help those who have been affected by this disaster.

GMP funds will be directed through ACT Alliance, which has member agencies based in Indonesia. ACT Alliance members on the ground have reported that items such as tarpaulins, blankets, tents and food as well as health services are in short supply for the increasing number of displaced people. Vulnerable groups like the elderly, children, people with disabilities, and pregnant women, are in particular need help as the rainy season draws closer.

As of October 10, the death toll is over 2000 people and is expected to rise over the coming days. The impact is being felt by about two million people.

Hery Susanto, Academic Dean of GMP partner, Christian Church Theological School of Indonesia (CCTSI) says:

“News from Sulawesi is terrible. People in Palu have been evacuated, and many have gone to stay with relatives. Government agencies, organisations, churches and volunteers are working together to help with the emergency. It is a traumatic and sad situation. People have lost family members, property and their hopes.”

We understand many of our supporters already contribute financially to the work of GMP, and for that we are truly grateful. We know you care about helping others in their time of need, so ask if you are also able to partner with us in this emergency response, we and the people of Sulawesi, would be deeply thankful.

This is an ongoing disaster, with the likelihood that the news from Sulawesi will only get worse in the coming weeks. We commend the people of Sulawesi to your prayers.

In the unlikely event that funds raised exceed the amount needed for this appeal, excess funds will be used to support work in other communities around the world affected by conflict and disaster.
